Perspectives Parents: A Survey That Teaches Us a Lot
We think we know the reality of parents with young children, but do we know how they see their reality, and what their difficulties and needs are? These are the questions that were addressed in Perspectives Parents, an initiative launched in 2013 by Avenir d’enfants, in collaboration with the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) and the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR).
Close to 15,000 parents took part in this survey, unprecedented in scope, which provided an opportunity to collect data from 16 regions across Québec. This is the “quantitative” component of Perspectives Parents. It is unique not only because of its scope, but because fathers account for 47% of responders.
With regard to the “qualitative” component, it was conducted by the UQTR’s Centre d’études interdisciplinaires sur le développement de l’enfant et la famille (CEIDEF). As a result of discussion groups in which a hundred or so parents took part, researchers provided a clear picture of the parents’ day-to-day reality. Entitled ‘La perspective des parents sur leur expérience avec de jeunes enfants,’ this research highlights the relationship between parents and the various services and resources at their disposal.
Thanks to the quantitative and qualitative components, Perspectives Parents provides reliable, and at times surprising, data on the experiences of mothers and fathers. This broad picture provides an opportunity for actors in the field of early childhood to focus on the well-being of parents and, in the process, have a more significant impact on the development of children and communities.
