Kudos for Mieux soutenir nos garons (Better Support for Boys)
The Quebec Survey of Child Development in Kindergarten (QSCDK) revealed that boys are more likely than girls (33% and 18% respectively) to be vulnerable in at least one area of development upon entering kindergarten. With a view towards better meeting the individual needs of young children as well as reducing this gap, the Estrie region’s Partenaires pour la petite enfance de la MRC des Sources developed a frame of reference and educational tools entitled « Mieux soutenir nos garçons ».
Taking into account the social realities of girls and boys is recognized as a strategy for adapting interventions that offer the best chances of success not only for girls, but for boys as well. As the Secrétariat à la condition féminine du Québec pointed out, in no way is this a case of positive or negative discrimination towards girls or boys; it’s a recognition of the fact that they grasp reality and social relations in a different way, and so taking a different approach with them may be necessary to help them achieve the same goals.
The analysis of the data, along with stakeholder insights, led to the creation of a frame of reference and six pedagogical worksheets that put forward concrete strategies and tools that make it easier for the educational staff to adapt their responses to boys.
The early childhood partners in the MRC des Sources are proud to make these new tools available to every organization that works with children: « Mieux soutenir nos garçons ».
