The Adopt a Bike Project is pedaling its way to success with the help of Astronauts and Martians from the CPE LUnivers des petits Memphrmagog.
A wonderful partnership of sorts was forged between CPE youngsters (3 and 4 year olds) and «Adopt a Bike,» a project spearheaded by La Ruche High School. The initial project was a work platform made up of special needs students, a teacher and a technical instructor. Together, they spruced up bikes that were in need of care. Students learned how to maintain and repair bikes while acquiring knowledge in the field. The bikes were then offered, free of charge, to youngsters who didn’t have one. The distribution has just ended. More than 80 bikes were given out to youth in the Memphremagog MRC and to the new Auberge Jeunesse in Magog.
The partnership with the CPE was intended to help youngsters discover biking, give them a chance to practice before the warm weather arrived, and develop their social and motor skills. The project also had an impact on the two students who conducted the bike workshops with youngsters from the CPE. Indeed, Leyla and Zoé both improved their
self-confidence and social skills.
The workshops were held in the gymnasium of the Pavillon De La Relance, near the CPE. The course was safe and provided an opportunity to promote bike safety and helmet use.
Leyla and Zoé contributed greatly to the success of these workshops. During the activities, the group was divided into two. While one part of the group was learning about bikes, the other part of the group was involved in flag games and even yoga, thanks to guidance from Leyla and Zoé. Some children even decided to try out the wooden bike jump. Moreover, courses were designed using cones, chairs or other material in order to help the children hone their skills while having fun! Over the weeks, I’ve seen these youngsters evolve and grow, and I’ve seen two wonderful young girls blossom.
The bikes will be on loan to the CPE for the summer period.
We very much hope that this activity will be repeated in the coming years.
The challenge, of course, is the financing. We will have to see if and how the lead organization can repeat the experience in the years ahead.
I must also acknowledge the huge commitment from Axel Royer-Gagné and teacher Jacques Bureau, two men who served as role models and mentors to these children and for whom nothing is impossible. They care deeply about other human beings, especially those who will become tomorrow’s adults. Hats off to them!

To combat the slump, citizens came up with the idea of planting gardens in public spaces and of putting up a sign encouraging fellow citizens to help themselves, free of charge, to the fruits and vegetables that were grown. The project snowballed and the movement spread to the four corners of the globe!
