Food Security Consultation
The Comité de Sécurité Alimentaire Memphrémagog (CéSAM), a food security committee, has been working for three years to ensure that all citizens in the MRC have access to healthy food.
On April 6, members organized a consultation at the Adult Education Centre in Magog in order to bring together some thirty organization representatives and citizens working in the area of food security and to come up with guidelines for action to improve the situation.
In order to set things in motion, twelve micro presentations were offered by various actors and project initiators in the area of food security: the Centre d’éco-initiative populaire (CéPOP), the Memphremagog Food Bank, the Coop Du Grand Bois, the Volunteer Action Centre in Magog (CAB), the Collective Kitchen Bouchée Double, the Association du Marais-de-la-Rivière-aux-Cerises (LAMRAC), the Community Garden Les Arpents Verts, the Centre l’Élan, the Haute-Yamaska Groupe Actions Solutions Pauvreté (anti-poverty group), Sherbrooke: Nourishing City, the Villa Pierrot Gardens and CéSAM.
Participants were then invited to share their views on three topics:
-The right to food: they want this right to be recognized, deemed a priority and
receive funding. Some suggestions include offering meals in schools (such as CPEs), encouraging local purchasing and urban agriculture.
-Their contribution: they feel they can best contribute by sharing information, knowledge, resources, broadcasting space, cultivable space, gathering places or even crops. Another way of contributing is to participate in upcoming public consultations (such as the one on parks and green spaces conducted by the City of Magog); to donate one’s time to help organizations or further initiatives; and to take part in rallying activities.
-The role of education: they would like to emphasize the sense of enjoyment and communion that comes from sharing a meal. Given the fact that processed foods take up more and more room on our plates, they would like to bring back home economics classes (cooking) in our schools, as well as early interventions, in order to awaken children’s curiosity and develop their sense of taste.
The participants enjoyed their afternoon, especially the networking component and the on-site meetings that occurred. Everyone learned a lot during the micro presentations and found the discussions to be stimulating and engaging.
The action plan will soon be enhanced by the CéSAM as a result of the ideas that emerged from this meeting.
